Synopsis
The story of Anna and Dirck begins in Holland
–the Netherlands- in the seventeenth century.
Two young people, children still, decide to flee
the wars in the Netherlands and depart for the
new world. After a long and dangerous journey,
the couple arrives in the city of Man Kattan (Manhattan).
From there, they travel north via the big river,
named Mauritius, later re-named the Hudson river.
Finally they arrive at Ford Orange (now Albany)
and settle as the first Dutch Americans.
Their travels through North-Holland and the Hudson
valley offer me -Willem Burgert, the designer-
the opportunity to illustrate all kind of particular
issues. Like the development of the mills, the
first polders, the walled cities, the harbor of
Amsterdam and the port of the island of Texel.
As well as the shores of the new world, the first
traces of the town of New Amsterdam and the settlements
along the Hudson river.
